We are sailing through the holy month of Ramadan. It is the believer's healing to the scar, the solace to the pain, and the way back to purity. سبحان الله Time flies so fast. How is it that it rushed to the last ten and we failed to exploit it?! سبحان الله.
The haunting guilt from our actions, the evil of our hands, the vileness of our tongues, the wickedness of our minds, the sins we chose to do consciously, and those chosen inadvertent, the screeching pain of our soul and its screaming resounding in our ears, it's hard to cope, it's hard to hold, it's hard to survive. There is never an escape from the consequences of our actions. We will reap what we sow. We will see what we send forth. There is no more running away from the truth. It's Ramadan. It's time.
He has certainly succeeded who purifies himself.
Do not run away from your Rabb, do not run into destruction, do not run into misery. The Most Merciful Lord has given this month for purification. There is warmth in the air. There is love in the air. There is dua in the lips and hope in the minds. There is peace embracing you in the prayer rug. This is the month in which Allaah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ revealed the guidance. An unchanging miracle for mankind until qiyamah. Allaah gave us this month to turn back to Him. Then, how to do the tazkiyyah?!
The key step to any conscious change is acceptance. Understanding and accepting how a human being works in terms of his internal and external context is indispensable. Understanding indicates knowing how Allaah structured it. The rooh, nafs, aql and qalb play invariable roles in letting one strive forth through the test of Dunya. One should understand this and should wield it with guidance from Allaah. A man shouldn't think that he can control himself, his thoughts, desires, and actions by being unaware of the design.
Nafs are a vital component of human existence and of paramount importance like the soul. It is essential to understand how it works to have a balanced and obedient life to the Exalted Lord. Nafs is often misunderstood as evil and profane. This misapprehended theme makes one heedless of it. Nafs has needs. It is vulnerable and insecure, craves to be addressed, and demands attention. Tending to the needs of nafs sufficiently within the shade of the guidance from the Exalted Rabb is ethical for a believer. Tame your nafs through love. Care it with authority and nourishment. Keep it in check through efforts. A neglected nafs not attended to in the way it deserves will become catastrophic to oneself and those around.
Being said, following your nafs blindly can cost you your akhirah and dunya. It needs to be treated with delimitation. The soul is always in need of its Lord. Racing the dunya satisfying the nafs alone, that too if in the prohibited directions, is fatal. Allowing the mind to wander over dunya, being reluctant to the commands of the Lord will make the heart harder every second until it becomes thoroughly attached to worldly affairs, hence failing to notice the purpose. If your soul is deprived of its food, your nafs will emerge stamping upon it. No knowledge, no resilience, and no piety would help you in the moment of evil whispers. A believer should be aware of this. The ability to distinguish between consciousness and waswas should be learnt, understood and mastered. An evil thought when understood as from nafs should be ignored and must not be followed with action or attention. It must not affect the believer's peace, nor his life.
Feed your soul consistently with the remembrance of its Lord in the morning and in the evening. Fill it with the recitation of His Kalaam. It is the guidance, the reassurance, the path. A believer should follow the middle way in all his affairs. The fine line of balance between the nafs and the intellect is that brings your heart peace and contentment. Being kind to oneself is the empathy we should begin with. A person who is acquainted with his nafs and who flourishes his soul with bounty from his Lord and pays obedience and loyalty to His commands will be able to regulate his actions by the permission of Allaah. Yet, one should not forget that every son of Adam is a sinner and the best of them are those who repent. We are here for the test and Allaah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ has given us the guidelines. He didn't leave us blind. His commands, warnings and instructions are the manifestations of the boundless love of the Exalted Lord.
Prophet ﷺ said that there is zeal for everything, and the zeal has the time of slackening. (Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2453). There is this time of energy and lethargy. Successful are those who are moderate. Hold on tight to the obligations and stay away from prohibitions until the time you breathe. It's the last ten of the blessed month. It is the month of forgiveness. Let's begin the tazkiyyah from ourselves ان شاء الله. Spend the nights in tawbah. Cry from the depths of your soul. Purify yourself from the filthiest of sins, those apparent and those hidden in the nights and the days passed. Switch yourself off from the dunya. Detach from the world and attach to the Lord of the worlds. Keep your tongue moist with istighfaar. Recite Qur'an in hours. Strive to meet your aim of completing the holy Quran before the month ends. Stick on to your obligatory salah. Do not be hesitant to pray voluntary prayers. Give sadqah in abundance. Make plenty and plenty of dua. Stand up for qiyam. Throw yourself into Sajdah. In the deepest nights of this beautiful Ramadan, share your darkest secrets, your earnest requests, your passionate affairs, and cry to Him. Weep before Him. Be vulnerable. Be you. He is Al-Aleem. He knows the innermost corner of your heart. He knows your happiness, your pains, your ambiguity, your uncertainty, your fear, and your wishes. Allaah loves nagging. Beg him. Beg him. He is your Master oh slave. Your Mawla. Your Haadi. He is Al-Mujeeb. He'll respond. He'll respond. He'll respond. Fall before Him and weep this Ramadan.
May Allaah make this Ramadan a huge investment in our books. May Allaah accept from us. May Allaah forgive us, our parents, our siblings, our spouses, our children, our family, our relatives, our friends, our deceased, our alive. May Allaah unite this ummah in Jannat-ul-Firdaws. May Allaah make this Ramadan light upon light for our akhirah. May He shower His love upon us, His guidance upon us, His mercy upon us. May He be pleased with us and grand us husnul khatimah with shahadah in tongues, eeman in hearts, and purity in actions.
(ٱلْحَمْدُ لِلّٰهِ, the content in many instances is inspired from others. May Allaah reward them all. Few lines are directly taken without any change. Considering the intentions being the same, identity is not specified. The reward is indeed with Allaah. Include us in duas.)
